navI Notes: 8

LET THERE BE LIGHT!

I told you the JPS people were on the road right? So this afternoon, around 5pm when the neighbour called to tell us that the power had come back, we had to wait until Pops came home to turn the breaker switches back on.

When he did, there was nothing. My 8 year old niece asked "Grandpa, you pay the bill?" Of course we had.

So at my insistence, we called the electrician who told Pops what to do and as I was finishing up my shower....sorry, one-gallon-bath, on came the lights. We all squealed.

By this time, all the meats had been cooked and eaten, all things which had spoilt were thrown away, and I remarked to Villy that the hurricane was good for ridding us of things in the fridge that weren't being used. A sort of inventory purge.

So it's an end to the candlelight dinners, but not an end to the Kandlelight Kalooki games. Because my nephew is back at school, we have to play fewer games. He won tonight, but watch out for me and him tomorrow.

The dogs are the same. Kalli hasn't learnt. I am dying for my brother to take her away to his house. In the meantime, Ivanna (she still doesn't know that's her name) is barking up a storm. She likes water, I got her into the habit by bathing her very often in the sink outside. I also used to wash her feet when I couldn't bathe her fully. So she's not afraid of water. I guess she's the perfect Hurricane Puppy.

We started to clean up the yard today, so it looks a lot cleaner now.

But Ivan was a non-event as far as I am concerned, but I am sure when we hear from Mad Bull it will be a different story.

What's Kalooki?

It's a card game a bit like Gin Rummy (I think). But very intriguing and you can get hooked on it. Mad Bull plays a lot I think.

Do you play with regular cards or do you play on the PC?

Posted by: Stu at September 17, 2004 09:32 AM

Regular cards. Depending on how many people are playing, you play with two or three or four packs. BAsically it's a series of games where you have to collect cards in a certain sequence, or 3 of the same number/letter.

So you start wtih a game called 333 and that means you have to collect 3 sets of 3 of the same letter/number. so you can end up with 3 Kings, 3 Tens and 3 Fours and they can be different suits within the 3 cards. when you have that, you lay them face up on the table. That's called "coming down". You always have to discard one card that you dont want on the discard pile. If you "come down" and have only one card left that you will discard, then everybody else who has not yet come down, or who might have come down but still have cards in their hand, has to double to value of the cards in their hand. "Pretties" like King Queen and Jack are 10 points each.

Now you also have a game with a 4 in it, so it might be 334. This means you have to collect two sets like what I described above, and the '4' is a sequence of 4 cards in the same suit. So you could end up with a 4 being 3,4,5,6 of clubs or J,Q,K,A of diamonds. so your "come down" hand may look like this...

3 Tens (no need to be same suit), 3 Fours (no need to be same suit) and J,Q,K,A of diamonds.

There is a series of I think 9 games...

333
334
344
444
3333
3334
3344
3444
4444

At the end of that, the person who has the least points from all the games is the winner.

Hope that is a good explanation.

Sounds like fun. I may need to wait a few years to get my kids involved. They are only 4 and 6 right now. We play Old Maid, Go Fish and a kid variant of a rummy type game. We also play dominoes, but we don't "slam" them on the table :)

Remind me of how Old Maid goes again? I was trying to remember that yesterday.

Kalooki....not me.

JPS was kind to me tonight.

I dsagree with you regarding Ivan being a 'non-event', some serious breeze did blow up here!

Thank God for life, for clean water, electricity and ice.

You now what. My kids always beat me at Old Maid so I must not really know how to play :) You don't want to learn from me!

Posted by: Stu at September 18, 2004 02:32 AM

Ivan a non-event! You take that back, right now! ;-)
No, Mich, you were right, when you heard from MB (and others), you pobably don't feel the same way...
