What To Look For In a King Size Bed Frame
Because king size beds have large heavy mattresses and double box springs, it is important that the bed frame provides sufficient support. Quality bed frames are usually made of wood, iron or brass. Brass beds usually have iron rails. The bed frame consists of a headboard, two side rails and a foot rail or foot board. In a king size bed frame, there should also be a center support to prevent the bed from sagging in the middle.
Inexpensive hollywood style bed frames usually do not have head boards, but have a head rail instead. These frames are usually made of light weight metal. If the metal frame is not sturdy enough, bending and twisting of frame components can occur. This can cause damage to the box springs or mattress. Most bed frames require the use of bed slats, which may not be included with the frame. Slats are usually one inch by four inch or one inch by six inch boards cut to extend horizontally across the frame to support the springs and mattress.
In a quality platform bed, the platform should be made of plywood and reinforced with framing lumber. Some platforms may be made of MDF. If the platform is not reinforced, it may develop a sag in the center. Always check platform king size bed frames for reinforcing. The size and weight of king size mattresses means the center of the bed frame should always be reinforced.
Iron or brass king size bed frames have iron side rails which require bed slats to provide optimum support for the box springs and mattress. Look for a center support. The bed slats should fit over the center support and rest on the bed rails on each side. Make sure the center support is sufficiently sturdy to bear it’s share of the weight.
Wood king size bed frames usually have wood side rails, but the center support is often metal. As with iron and brass beds, make sure this center support won’t warp under the weight of the mattress and sleeping people. It’s important that the bed frame provide proper support, or it will effect the performance of both the mattress and the box springs.
With king size bed frames the primary consideration should be the amount of support the frame provides. It is best to look for a good quality frame. King size mattresses and springs are expensive and you don’t want them ruined by a poor quality frame.
