The Difference Between Coffee Machines

There are basically two types of coffee machines. While both types function by pouring hot water over grounds, percolating machines work differently from drip machines. Percolators can be electric or stove top. Stove top percolators are more difficult to find and are most often available at camping supply stores. Electric percolators aren’t as easy to find as drip coffee makers.

Drip coffee makers function similarly to espresso machines. Water is placed in a reservoir and the ground coffee is placed in a dry basket, usually with a paper or fine mesh filter. The water is heated and then slowly pumped over the coffee. The hot water drips through the coffee grounds and into a pot below. Drip coffee usually has very little sediment, since the filters prevent the grounds from escaping into the pot.

In a percolator, the water is poured directly into the pot. The ground coffee is placed in a metal basket with very fine holes and a cover. A metal tube runs from the bottom of the pot through the center of the metal basket. As the water heats it is forced up through the tube and over the basket and drips back into the pot. As this process is repeated, the coffee becomes stronger and stronger. Unlike the drip coffee machine, the percolator runs the same water through the grounds multiple times. This can make the coffee very strong if it is left to perk too long.

Perked coffee is usually stronger than drip coffee and is far more likely to have sediment or grounds in it. The metal basket is less effective at preventing the grounds from escaping than the paper or fabric filters used in drip makers.

Drip coffee machines for home use usually make no more than 10 or 12 cups of coffee at a time. Larger coffee urns are usually percolators. Commercial coffee makers that have a dedicated water source are drip machines, but home drip machines would require too large a reservoir for practicality. It takes a lot of water to make 30 or more cups of coffee.

Vending coffee machines usually don’t make good coffee because they usually aren’t drip machines or percolators, They use an instant coffee powder to make the coffee they dispense. They do the same to make the tea or hot chocolate which are often offered in the same machine. Of course, those who prefer instant coffee may like coffee from vending machines.

Take The Lower Bunk, It’s a 4ft Bed

Newer bunk beds are often two bed of different sizes. The top bunk is a standard single bed and the lower bunk is a full size, a 4ft bed. There are some advantages to this style of bunk bed, especially in kid’s rooms. The clearest advantage is that the lower bunk doesn’t fell claustrophobic. With two single beds stacked one over the other, the lower bunk can sometimes feel a bit small.

A lower bunk that is a 4ft bed takes up less space than two twin beds, but allow extra sleeping room when friends stay over. If your kids aren’t ready to sleep alone yet, they can sleep together until they decide they are ready for their own bed. The full size bottom bunk doesn’t have the closed in feeling that sometimes occurs with bunk beds.

If the bed is up against a wall on one side, a full size 4ft bed for the lower bunk, will help prevent injury if a sleeping child rolls off the top bunk. Instead of falling onto the floor, the child has a shorter drop onto a softer surface. They just fall into the lower bunk. This is another great reason for considering this staggered style bunk bed.

This is the best thing to happen to bunk beds in years. They are safer and more comfortable than regular twin bunk beds and they even have extra sleeping room. A 4ft lower bunk can even serve as a guest bed if you don’t have a separate guest room. You don’t need a convertible sofa or Murphy bed if you have a lower bunk that’s a full size bed. If your son or daughter doesn’t share a room, they’ll love being able to choose which bed to sleep in.

The only disadvantage to this type of bunk bed is that the beds can’t usually be separated to create two beds. One reason is that most bunk beds in this style have angled metal frames. The single size bunk beds are often made with wood frames that can be separated to form two beds. The truth is, though, that most people with bunk beds never separate them anyway.

If you think this type of bunk bed would work for you, check with local furniture sellers or online to see bunk beds with 4ft beds for lower bunks.

What To Look For In a King Size Bed Frame

Because king size beds have large heavy mattresses and double box springs, it is important that the bed frame provides sufficient support. Quality bed frames are usually made of wood, iron or brass. Brass beds usually have iron rails. The bed frame consists of a headboard, two side rails and a foot rail or foot board. In a king size bed frame, there should also be a center support to prevent the bed from sagging in the middle.

Inexpensive hollywood style bed frames usually do not have head boards, but have a head rail instead. These frames are usually made of light weight metal. If the metal frame is not sturdy enough, bending and twisting of frame components can occur. This can cause damage to the box springs or mattress. Most bed frames require the use of bed slats, which may not be included with the frame. Slats are usually one inch by four inch or one inch by six inch boards cut to extend horizontally across the frame to support the springs and mattress.

In a quality platform bed, the platform should be made of plywood and reinforced with framing lumber. Some platforms may be made of MDF. If the platform is not reinforced, it may develop a sag in the center. Always check platform king size bed frames for reinforcing. The size and weight of king size mattresses means the center of the bed frame should always be reinforced.

Iron or brass king size bed frames have iron side rails which require bed slats to provide optimum support for the box springs and mattress. Look for a center support. The bed slats should fit over the center support and rest on the bed rails on each side. Make sure the center support is sufficiently sturdy to bear it’s share of the weight.

Wood king size bed frames usually have wood side rails, but the center support is often metal. As with iron and brass beds, make sure this center support won’t warp under the weight of the mattress and sleeping people. It’s important that the bed frame provide proper support, or it will effect the performance of both the mattress and the box springs.

With king size bed frames the primary consideration should be the amount of support the frame provides. It is best to look for a good quality frame. King size mattresses and springs are expensive and you don’t want them ruined by a poor quality frame.
